Apprenticeships have many advantages, not only does the apprentice gain invaluable experience whilst learning on the job, but the employers reap in the benefits too. Businesses can tailor the training given to apprentices to suit their business needs, essentially growing their own workforce.
This week we talk to Liz Griffin, Practice Manager of Brierley Park Medical Centre in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, to get an employer’s perspective of why hiring an apprentice is great for business.
Brierley Park are no stranger to hiring apprentices, they are currently on their fifth apprentice, here Liz explains why Brierley Park has hired an apprentice time and time again:
Why did you decide to take on an apprentice?
We decided to take on apprentices to give youngsters the opportunity to work in a professional environment and to help them get on the career ladder.
When did you first hire an apprentice?
We hired our first apprentice back in September 2012.
How did you find the recruitment process?
This has improved over time. Our latest recruitment process was very slick and efficient.
How long have you been employing apprentices / why did you decide to recruit again?
We are on our fifth apprentice having decided to recruit again to give another young person a career opening and to gain experience.
What benefits have you seen from an employer’s point of view?
It gives us the opportunity to develop new talent.
How well have the apprentices fit into the workplace?
We have had 2 excellent apprentices who worked hard and fitted well into the practice team. Our latest apprentice is settling in well and we have high hopes for her.
What is a typical day for an apprentice at your company?
• Working on reception dealing with patients face to face and over the telephone
• Ensuring that the reception area remains tidy and safe for patients and staff
• Filing of patient records
• Working closely with other colleagues to ensure that the patient experience is a good one
